For all those who love spring and parties here’s an event worth checking out. Shine 3 is a fundraising shindig that occurs during Toronto’s Contact Photo Festival.

In case you don’t know much about the event here’s a description I plagiarized from the Facebook page:

Silverline Studios in association with Sheridan’s Bachelor of Photography program presents SHINE 3, a benefit to fund the Gian Carlo Drueco Award for Excellence in Photography.

Last year we lost a bright and promising photographic talent far too early to cancer. Diagnosed in April of 2012, Gian immediately underwent surgery followed by chemotherapy to try and keep the disease at bay. The following May, many of Gian’s friends and colleagues banded together under the banner SHINE 2 to stage a benefit photographic silent auction in support of Gian and his partner Michelle. Both free-lancers, and without the benefits of supplemental insurance, this support helped with their living expenses while fighting Gian’s cancer. Tragically, and much sooner than anyone expected, Gian lost his fight in July .

In his memory, Silverline Studios, Sheridan College and Gian’s partner Michelle Repasky have come together this year to organize SHINE 3, a celebration of Gian’s life and work. Meant to conicide with the CONTACT Photograhy Festival, this event will showcase Gian’s own images as well as staging a silent auction featuring established and emerging photographic talents from Toronto and abroad. Funds raised will all go towards establishing a permanent award for graduating year students at Sheridan who have demonstrated creativity and excellence in their photography.

The event will be held Thursday May 16, 2013 starting at 8pm. Admission is free with a door donation strongly encouraged. Complimentary refreshments and snacks will be served throughout the evening. This will be an “open invitation” event for anyone who cares to attend, but an RSVP will be required for entry.

International Record Store Day

For those of you who were celebrating it – yesterday was Record Store Day. Didn’t know this existed? Well it does and was even trending on Twitter. The day may have passed but that shouldn’t stop you from cracking out your old/new/used LPS and enjoying the hiss and scratch that makes the music of yesteryear sound sexy. To mark this occasion I partnered up with Forage Press and a few of their other artists to ‘remix’ some records (click here). The idea was to photograph an album cover, remix it, and then shoot it again. I essentially cut it apart and then placed the album at three different depths and then lit it, shot it and sent it off. Here’s another shot I took as a bit of LP foreplay to get me in the mood.

Fine Food Folks.

There’s nothing finer than spending a day or two shooting some fine food folks. For a recent commission I was asked to shoot a few things, actually about a dozen things. It was actually a helluva lot of shooting over a few days and at one point I had to channel my inner Kiefer Sutherland as the clock seemed to always be working against me. I’ve posted two of my favourite shoots from the photo madness that ensued. Here’s celebrity chef, restaurant owner and TV personality Massimo Capra. This guy’s amazing and was a dream to shoot – a total natural in front of the lens.

Here’s Christian, a restaurant manager from Toca at The Ritz-Carlton. He was dressed sharp, had a strong sense of style and acted like a complete professional. I love the stern look – a man who knows how to take care of business. And those 15 minutes I spent shooting in the cheese room was a gift from the dairy gods.
