Fine Food Folks.

March 18, 2013 § Leave a comment

There’s nothing finer than spending a day or two shooting some fine food folks. For a recent commission I was asked to shoot a few things, actually about a dozen things. It was actually a helluva lot of shooting over a few days and at one point I had to channel my inner Kiefer Sutherland as the clock seemed to always be working against me. I’ve posted two of my favourite shoots from the photo madness that ensued. Here’s celebrity chef, restaurant owner and TV personality Massimo Capra. This guy’s amazing and was a dream to shoot – a total natural in front of the lens.

Massimo

Here’s Christian, a restaurant manager from Toca at The Ritz-Carlton. He was dressed sharp, had a strong sense of style and acted like a complete professional. I love the stern look – a man who knows how to take care of business. And those 15 minutes I spent shooting in the cheese room was a gift from the dairy gods.

Jeremy Goes to Prison.

Years ago when I was assisting on a photo shoot that had me spending the day in a maximum security penitentiary. I asked the warden how someone like me would fare in prison. In my mind I was picturing the Fugitive – smart, good looking, street smart guy wrongly incarcerated. He gave me the up and down and laughed. Luckily he decided to impart his wisdom: ” Some guys join a gang and they do ok, other guys put themselves in solitare voluntarily, some of the bigger guys who are around 7′ 2″ tend to do alright but for the rest, they usually make it 2 or 3 days until there’s an incident.”

Uh, ok.

Fortunately this project, commissioned by The Grid, had me visiting a film and tv studio where they constructed some pretty neat sets. To view the full photo essay click here.

And let me reiterate the obvious, especially if you’re a hipster. Don’t go to prison.

Bathroom designs with Jeremy.

Ok, so maybe the headline leaves something to be desired. But on the other hand Jeremy was commissioned to photograph a very pretty designed bathroom. This image which appears in the UK publication Living Etc focuses on making your bathroom as relaxed as possible. Hmm, maybe that phrase also leaves something to be desired.

Jeremy Directs Canadian Tire

Jeremy was able to get all cinematic when he directed this sentimental motion spot for the good folks over at Canadian Tire. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to make a cameo as he couldn’t pass for an 11-year old boy. You can check out his personal site here.

Jeremy Shoots a Napkin

Jeremy is the kind of guy can appreciate a good napkin – so it is with an odd bit of pride that we present this latest work for Markville’s Express Eatery.  He elaborates:

Yup, each time I go to Ikea I stalk up on napkins although I think they just changed the pricing from 50 for $3.99 to 30 for $3.99 so I am extra relieved to be sitting on a supply which could potentially last me through any Walking Dead like pandemic.

For this shot I must admit that Jigisha (Art Director) was awarded the role of most important person on set for her ability to fold and make napkins while under the gun. Her needlework was exceptionally impressive.

Let’s just take a minute to celebrate Thomas Saint and his 1790 invention- the sewing machine – which rarely gets its due.

Well done Tommy.

Son & Mom

Aristea and Angela collaborated on a project together based on the same concept of a son and his mother. The video above captures the behind the scenes from the shooting day. The project consists of two parts, portraits by Angela and still life shots by Aristea. Both series were inspired by old antique objects and the possessions people hold on too. The title series of son and mom signifies the son’s emotional reality as he sorts through the possessions once belonging to his mother.

The above six images are just half of what they came up with, you may see the rest of the series on their individual websites;  angelalewis.com  //  aristearizakos.com

Many many thanks to our awesome team; Christina Yan on set/props, Anita Cane, on hair/makeup, Shea Hurley on wardrobe styling, Suen for the video and Bryan Ulrich for being a handsome fella.

The heat makes me want to either collapse or jump in a pool, how about you? It was quite the tease last week when I photographed these two stylish kids for The Grid’s “how to sneak up to a rooftop pool” spread, at the Hyatt downtown.

You can see the fancy tid bits about pool fashion in the image below.

Angela Lewis will often photograph the Q&A section for The Grid, and this time she hung out in the gayborhood with Slut Walk co-founder, Heather Jarvis.

I wanted to include a few more photos from our shoot other than what was seen in the paper.. mostly to show all of the hair flippin’ Heather was doing during our shoot. Check out the article to hear this lovely lady speak about Slut Walk.. and enjoy the photos!
